Bill Decas’ Estate-Plan Gift Will Enhance and Create Scholarships to Benefit Future Students

Bill Decas

The University of Alabama’s National Alumni Association has received an $8 million gift from the estate of Bill Decas. His generous donation will be used to enhance four existing in-state scholarships and create a new endowed scholarship for out-of-state students. Decas was an attorney from Wareham, Massachusetts, and a part-owner of Decas Farms, a family cranberry business. He had a deep appreciation for The University of Alabama despite never having attended.

He was particularly drawn to the University after the Crimson Tide’s national championship in football in 1966. His fondness for the University and his meaningful friendships here led to his significant philanthropic contribution.

Decas’ close relationship with the previous National Alumni Association Director, Pat Whetstone, played a crucial role in the development of four in-state Alumni Crimson Scholarships, which are the NAA’s most prestigious scholarships. Recipients of these scholarships receive yearly tuition, a $300 annual book grant, a $3,500 stipend and an additional, one-time $2,000 study abroad/research stipend.

Whetstone emphasized that nonalumni developing the same affinity for UA as Decas is incredibly rare. His friendship with Decas allowed him to witness the incredible impact of nurturing relationships and giving back as well as the tremendous transformation it sparks beyond individual achievement.

“Trust and friendship were factors in Bill supporting UA,” Whetsone said. “And when he got to meet the scholarship recipients, I think that really attracted him to growing the scholarships even more.” NAA Executive Director Jimmy Warren said he admires the relationship between Whetstone and Decas, which illustrates the lasting impact of meaningful friendships.

Decas’ incredible generosity and support will benefit countless students, and his legacy will continue to advance the mission of The University of Alabama for years to come. Decas is remembered as an active philanthropist, supporting his communities of Wareham and Middleboro, Massachusetts, St. George Greek Orthodox Church and the Wareham Historical Society. He was also a member of The University of Alabama President’s Cabinet.
